More information on volunteering with UnCommon Law

UnCommon Law depends on volunteers for many of our tasks. We invite anyone who connects with our mission to reach out and get involved.

Information on part-time Law Clerk opportunities for current law students are available here.

General Volunteers

We welcome volunteers who can: write, organize, translate, photograph, edit, graphic design, fundraise, plan events, work events, and research. We especially welcome formerly incarcerated people to join our team. If you are interested in volunteering with our organization, please fill out the volunteer form at the bottom of this page.

Attorneys and law firms

We do not currently have pro-bono volunteer opportunities available for attorneys or law firms, although we encourage any interested parties to sign up for our email list to stay up to date on any changes here, and to fill out the volunteer form at the bottom of this page.

The best way to support our legal work is through direct donations, which allow our incredible attorneys and legal staff to continue fighting for our clients.

Therapists

As we partner with people along their pathway to parole preparedness, we delve into deeply emotional territory. We believe that most people who are in prison have experienced trauma long before they got there and for those who somehow haven’t, the experience of prison itself is a traumatizing one.

We welcome therapists of any discipline (MSW, MFT, PsyD, Psychologists) to volunteer their time to connect with one or more of our clients inside. Therapist volunteers travel to prison (within a 2 hour drive of the Bay Area) to provide weekly or biweekly therapy to provide services to someone preparing to go before the parole board.

We request at minimum a yearlong commitment to establish a therapeutic relationship. UnCommon Law provides regular attorney check-ins on your specific case(s) and a monthly therapist case conference with the clinical supervisor.

We also welcome therapists with available office/meeting space to provide therapy to people who have recently returned from prison.
