Serena Witherspoon (she/her), Staff Attorney, holds a J.D. from the University of California Hastings and a B.A. in Sociology from University of California Berkeley. During her time in law school, Serena worked with UnCommon Law as a law clerk. Serena also worked as a legal intern at Phillips Black. She was previously an Equal Justice Works Fellow, sponsored by Apple, Inc. and Baker McKenzie. During her Fellowship, Serena represented people with innocence claims who are eligible for release under California’s parole process. In collaboration with criminal procedure experts, she designed a framework to provide factors that establish when an innocence claim is plausible and designed a training based on her findings to present to the Parole Board so that it has better tools to make determinations regarding innocence claims.
